White Grullos
About White Grullos - This shade is extremely rare, perhaps the rarest of all Grulloshades.  White grullos tend to be born with a lavender tint on a very light buff coat.  They tend to be very dark around the eyes from the start and have black eyelashes.  However, it is not always easy to tell a white grullo at birth.  For example, Grullicious, who is now a very white grullo, was a normal silver shade after she shed her baby hair and a new winter coat came in (see her 2nd photo below).

Some believe all white grullos carry the cream gene required to produce palominos and buckskins, but we have proof otherwise.  Pretty Buck Zeb, featured below, has sired over 200 foals and none have carried the cream gene unless given to them by the dam.  Another misconception is that white grullos are gray or carry a roan modifier.  True white grullos do not.  How do you tell?  White grullos have a darker face than their body, there is little to no dappling on the body, and the dorsal is well defined without white or gray hairs mixed in the body.  Also look at the eyelashes.  All grullos, not just white grullo, have dark eyelashes where grays can have gray eyelashes.  Examine the mane and tail.  There is a difference between a "gray" mane/tail and a "frosted" mane/tail.  A gray mane/tail will have a silvery appearance and gray/white hairs throughout the base.  A grullo with a "frosted" mane/tail has white/slightly off white hairs layered over a darker mane/tail.  Although some grays are born grullo, in the AQHA if they modify to a gray color as they age, the papers should be corrected to reflect the gray color.
